Clutch Diagnosis
Clutch Grab
The clutch will not be smooth and will sharply engage when you release the clutch pedal.
Ø Check for broken, damaged or loose engine mounts first
Ø Deteriorated master or slave clutch cylinder (if Fitted) or binding cable in mechanical clutch systems.
Ø If not engine mounts, replace clutch plate assembly and thrust bearing, machine the flywheel and check/replace all relevant oil seals.
Clutch insufficiently releasing
This will be apparent by extra effort required to shift gears and or 1st gear impossible to select when wanting to take off.
Ø Low fluid level in clutch master cylinder. Leaks or air in hydraulic system.
Ø Seized or leaking master/slave cylinder or hoses/connections.
Ø Or broken or seized clutch cable in mechanically actuated clutch systems
Ø Excessive clutch pedal free travel
Ø Warped clutch plate
Ø Rectify as necessary
Clutch release noise
If you hear a noise when you depress the clutch pedal or as you release the clutch when taking off. Lightly depress the clutch pedal and if you hear a grinding or squealing noise you may have a problem with your release bearing or your clutch assembly.
Ø Check Release bearing
Ø Check clutch assembly for wear. Replace as necessary.
Noise when your car is idling and it goes away when you depress the clutch. Also you may hear a whining noise when you are driving.
Ø Worn Gearbox bearings. Gearbox will probably need reconditioning. With the gearbox removed it is advisable to inspect your clutch components and replace if worn.
